Boulder, Colorado is where the company first began as “Carmel House” in 1969.  Even today, as we travel around the state, we meet people who attended the University of Colorado in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s who remember the House on the Hill, and fondly relate stories of their interactions with the folks who lived there.  We still serve many of the people who came to Carmel almost 40 years ago.  

Because it was “home” to all the folks who lived there, Carmel House felt like a family: residents and staff together shared each others’ personal joys and tragedies.  There were weddings, births, new jobs and other triumphs to celebrate, as well as jobs lost, illnesses and deaths to grieve and to mourn.  We believe this feeling of “family” is what has set Carmel apart from other providers over the years, and has grown as the company has grown.  

Several of our senior staff have been with us since those early days, and continue to contribute their knowledge and experience as well as their personal emotional commitment to those we serve and their families, and to our staff.  This makes our Central Region a special place both to work and to receive services.

Unique to this Region is Best Buddies – a program developed and originally funded by the Kennedy family – which pairs college student volunteers with people receiving services in one-to-one relationships.  In most areas of the country, Best Buddies work with children; because of Carmel House’s close proximity to the CU campus when the program started here in the 1980’s, our adult residents were selected as Buddies, and the chapter continues to thrive.

This Region also offers weekly social events: an Arts & Crafts class at the Boulder Day Program site, and Monday evenings at The Outback restaurant for dinner, pool and conversations with old and new friends.  Many of us participate in EXPAND - the city of Boulder Recreation Department’s program of specialized activities and unified sports teams.  In addition, we have a weekly reading class which is open to anyone connected with Carmel who wants to learn to read or improve their reading skills.
